Ever wake up from a fun night at the bar, only to realize that your head is pounding? And though reaching for the Tylenol and Gatorade might seem like a good way help ease away the hangover, there are better remedies out there.

Hangovers happen when the body becomes dehydrated.  Drinking alcohol creates a dehydrating effect by increasing urine production.  This rapid loss of liquids causes fluids in the brain to dissipate, resulting in a headache, dry mouth and lethargy. Sound familiar? The acidic nature of alcohol can also have a negative effect on the stomach lining, causing pain and nausea.

You can help to delay or avoid a hangover by drinking water before, during and after alcohol consumption.  But if the damage is already done, and you’re suffering from a hangover, try out some of these cures:

1. Coconut water: Considered nature’s sweet cure, coconut water is extracted from the fruit before it turns into milk. This water is sold all over, low-calorie and fat-free.  It also contains more electrolytes and rehydrates the body faster than Gatorade.  Perfect after a rough night out.

2. Banana smoothie: Mixing some bananas, agave, milk and crushed aspirin can be your best friend when dealing with a hangover. The mix is known to calm an upset stomach and the potassium will help replace the minerals and electrolytes you lost the night before.

3. Drinkwel: This multivitamin was created by two UC Berkeley graduates.  This unique combination of ingredients is said to replenish nutrients, support liver functionality and help the body push out alcohol-induced toxins. Pop one of these for quick relief!

4. Exercise! There is no better way to get rid of the alcohol in your body than to sweat it out! Make sure that if you go for a walk, run, bike ride, swim or gym session — drink about 1 – 2 liters of water before you head out. It might not be easy to get out of bed, but in the end, you will feel much better!

The best cure for a hangover is to not drink at all. But if you must have a drink or two, everything in moderation will make you and your body much happier when that alarm goes off the morning after!
